Kiss and Spell Page 11
Ginger Breadhouse, daughter of the Candy Witch, had been cooking long enough to know that the reason her mother’s cucumber sandwich had been flavorless was that it had been prepared without joy. Food made without joy wasn’t nourishing. A life without joy wasn’t nourishing, either.
“Ready?” she asked her mom.
“Ready,” her mom said with a black-toothed smile.
“Lights! Camera! Action!” Theme music swelled.
“Hello, everyone. I’m Ginger Breadhouse. Welcome to Spells Kitchen, where good food is the secret ingredient to happiness.”

It was fun writing this book because, well, I hate to admit it, but I’m a terrible cook. My mother, however, is incredible. She makes everything from scratch. We grew up with homemade sourdough bread, her famous angel food cake, and homemade tortillas. When Ginger talks about good food bringing happiness, I thought of my mom’s cooking.
The world of Ever After High is an enormous, ever-changing place, filled with more details than one person can remember all by herself, so I lean on a cast of writers, editors, and designers to help keep track of everything. I am so grateful to the team at Mattel and the team at Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. They are, in no particular order: Pam Garfinkel, Erin Stein, Mary-Kate Gaudet, Christine Ma, Rachel Poloski, Nicole Corse, Robert Rudman, Audu Paden, and Julia Phelps.
And a very special thanks to Shannon Hale, for leading the way.
